MATHEMATICS TARGET SETTING FOR 2017/2018 (AUTUMN) CLASS: PLAYGROUP 2

Early Learning Goals

Numbers: Children count reliably with numbers from 1 to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Focus Area

  • Counting  on to 20
  • Counting with objects to 10
  • Ordering numbers to 10
  • Writing numbers to 10
  • One more / one less to 5

Shape, Space and Measures: Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Focus Area

  • Basic 2D shapes (Properties)
  • Patterns(shape, size, colour)
  •  Size ( big & small)
  • Height (tall & short)
  •  Capacity (empty & full)
  • Simple Positions to describe objects around

  • Counting back from 5
  • One more / one less to 10
  • Comparism of numbers (more/less)
  • Addition using objects to 5

Shape, Space and Measures: Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.

Focus Area

  • Review Basic 2D shapes (Properties)
  • Introduce some 2D shapes; oval, diamond, crescent ,
  •  Patterns(shape, size, colour)
  • Length  (long & short)
  • Weight (heavy & light)
  • Capacity (empty, half full & full)
  • Simple Positions to describe objects around
