The purpose of this policy is to reflect the school’s vision and the aims and ethos of BHS. It is also designed to promote good/ positive behaviour. This behaviour policy has been devised with regard for the health, safety and welfare of all members of the school community.

This policy seeks to set guidelines that support;

  • Effective learning and teaching.
  • Enhance self-esteem and social skills.
  • Self respect and in turn respect for other.
  • Independence, accountability and self discipline.
  • Respect for property and the environment of the school and local community.
  • Appropriate skills and attitude in relation to playground behaviour.
  • Disruptive free environment.

The Need for Positive Behaviour

Good/ positive behaviour and discipline are key foundation for good education. Without an orderly atmosphere effective teaching and learning cannot take place. We expect and insist on the highest standard of behaviour throughout our school. Whilst we have a number of rules, our behavioural policy is not primarily concerned with rule enforcement. However it is a means of promoting good relationship and good manners.

School Rules

  12. The use of the words please, thank you are compulsory
  13. We bring everything needed to ensure learning e.g. P.E Clothes, book bag, home work e.t.c.

Staff Roles

  1. Staff should let the pupils to know the result of their actions e.g. if you do this, this is what you will get, if you don’t do this, this is what will happen.
  2. Reward and praise positive behaviour.
  3. Pupils should be informed about class and school rules.
  4. The staff should work hand-in-hand with parents in developing the Child’s positive behaviour.

Role of the School

  1. The school should set behaviour policies that will be consistent throughout the school in setting standard behaviour.
  2. The school should also support the staff in the implementation of the set policies.
  3. The school should review set policies every two years.
  4. The school should keep records of all reported cases or serious misbehaviours
  5. The school should report to meet with parent when necessary.

Parent

  1. Parent should support the school when reasonable sanction to punish a child has been used.
  2. Parent should promote positive behaviour at home in other to have a consistency between home and school.
  3. Parent should contact the class teacher if they have any concerns about the way their child has been treated.

Reward System

  • Verbal praise by the teacher.
  • A written comment on the child’s work.
  • Any child that has observed the good behaviour criteria gets 1 point for a day.
  • When a child gets up to 25 points he/she visits the head teacher for a reward stamp and a note to take home.
  • Assembly recognition for a child who gets up to 40 points in a term. A badge is presented to the child to wear.
  • At the end of the academic session the child who gets up to 50 points in each term gets a reward cup and a certificate.
  • The reward system starts afresh every term.

Good Behaviour

Respect

  • Obeying instructions from teaching and non-teaching staff

Routine

  • Taking turns in every activity
  • Bringing your homework to school on appropriate days.
  • Active participation in class and school activities.
  • Finishing set task on time.

Responsibilities

  • Coming to school early and neat
  • Not living any of your property in school when leaving.
  • Making sure sitting area, book tray, reading corner and school bag corner are tidy always.
  • Caring for School property.
  • Always making you sure you are properly dressed throughout the day.
  • Bringing your P.E kit on the appropriate day.

Sanctions and Steps

  • Rocking the chair
  • Not paying attention during class lesson/ discussion
  • Running around the school except the play ground
  • Being in the wrong place at the wrong time(e.g. playground, library, kitchen/Home corner instead of class)
  • Ignoring instructions bringing sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks to school
  • Silly noises
  • Pushing in the line
  • Not taking turns where applicable
  • Quiet reminder.
  • Non-verbal warning (eye contact)
  • Verbal warning
  • Change child seat within the classroom.
  • Cooling off period within the class (5 min)
  • Withdrawer of fun thing within the class
Persistent stage 2  behaviour

  • Leaving class without permission
  • Lying against another child/teacher
  • Inappropriate dressing (not tucking in, not wearing tie, pulling off shoes)
  • Damaging school property writing or school furniture.
  • Name calling
  • Consistent lateness to school.
  • Consistent forgetting of homework.
  • Rudeness
  • Other pupil’s learning (disrupting lessons )
  • Minor challenge to authority.
  • Child misses playtime
  • Child sent to admin.
  • Send the child to a lower class until child is willing to accept wrong behaviour
Stage 3

  • Repeat stage 2 behaviour
  • Bullying
  • Fighting
  • Racism
  • Persistent swearing
  • Refusal to do set task
  •  Loss of playtime for 15 minutes
  • Child sent to head teacher
  • A phone call to parents
  • Record child’s behaviour on behavioural card.
  • Writing lines, apology letter or a story.
Stage 4

  • Repeat stage 3 offences.
  • Throwing object with intent to harm another child.
  • Harming someone to the extent of needing medical help.
  • Continue or more serious challenge to authority
  • Stealing school or other children’s property.
  • Highly offensive remark to the children/ teacher repeat refusal to do set task.
  •  Loss of playtime entire break.
  • Internal exclusion from lesson
  • Ban on representing the school and/ or trips outside school (for a fixed period)
  • Head teacher informed meeting with parents.
Stage 5

  • Repeated stage 4.
  • Persistent verbal abuse to a member of staff/ pupil
  • Physical abuse to any member of staff
  •  Exclusion from morning or afternoon activities (reduced time at school)
  • Suspension from school for a fixed term
Stage 6

  • Repeated stage 5
  •  Board of directors meet and decide on the way forward.
